All of them, human beings whose weaknesses and sins are hidden behind a thin veil of decency. How long does it take for masks to fall? One dinner!

The premiere of "The Dinner," based on the novel of the same name by Dutch writer Herman Koch, took place on October 22 at the Sofia Theater. Due to the fact that the play is based on a bestseller, translated into more than 55 languages, perhaps the majority of the audience, who had completely filled the entire capacity of the hall, was familiar with the story that was to be seen on stage. I was not. I had no idea what I would be served.

After the lights go out, we see two families on stage. The restaurant is expensive, the main characters are smiling, sophisticated, the topics of conversation are typical, even slightly boring. Two brothers, their wives, and in separate scenes - their children. However, the atmosphere is such that the tranquility itself is disturbing.

The main question in the play is how much the parents are responsible for what their children are, for their actions and actions. The main characters embody oppositional couples whose volcanic collision will occur within a single evening. Self-sacrifice - self-centeredness. True - a lie. Ideal family - family fake. Power, influence, opportunities in the face of the future Prime Minister against mediocrity, ordinaryness, insignificance in the face of his brother - a fired history teacher. Sick ambition, striving for prestige, concealed under a noble cause in Babet's face - the young woman of the future Prime Minister and stubbornness, immorality, insensitivity, dressed in Claire's motherly sense. Their children, who have done something terrible without being labeled good or bad, are simply a product of their parents.

The idea of parental love, emptied of content but seemingly at the forefront, can be filled with anything. Does this misunderstood love turn children into an unwitting redemptive victim of their parents, into distant, crippled people, even in a "political project". Where is the border between parent and child, how far he or she designs himself in his child, is he ready to admit his mistakes, can the child mirror his parents? Why it is so easy to fall into the trap of the so-called. "Bedouin morality" or the inability to distinguish good from evil.

"Dinner" raises difficult questions that can hardly be swallowed up, despite the subtle humor cleverly combined with tragic motives. The cast (Dariya Simeonova, Ivaylo Geraskov, Lilia Maravilya, Mikhail Milchev, Plamen Manasiev and students of the National Academy of Science and Technology "Kr. Sarafov") is brilliant - the continuing applause confirms it long after the end of the performance.
