Residents of Golemo selo and other settlements in the area of Bobov Dol TPP suffer from regular breaches of the plant. It is also one of the largest sources of dangerous air pollutants in Europe.

In July 2018, the TPP asked for permission to burn biomass and waste, with coal, however, without altering its combustion plant or investing in new advanced treatment systems. Upcoming Executive Environmental Agency (EEA) to declare its decision in favor of or against the application.

That's why Greenpeace - Bulgaria organizes Independence Square demonstration on 5 December 18: 30 h. Through a large-scale projection of the Council of Ministers facade, they will emphasize the authorities' responsibility to guarantee the right of clean air to all citizens through responsible energy decisions and environmental protection. They will ask from EEA and MOEW (Ministry of Environment and Water) not to issue a new comprehensive permit to Bobov Dol TPPto legitimize the incineration of waste.

The event is open and Greenpeace - Bulgaria invite all people from the country to join, not only with the presence of the demonstration, but also by sending letters to the two institutions from our special page for the problem.

About Bobov Dol TPP

Bobov Dol TPP is located just 300 meters from the main square of the village of Golemo selo and in the immediate vicinity of the homes of its inhabitants. As a result of the activity of the plant everything around - houses, cars, gardens and fields, is covered with a thick layer of dust, and the air is saturated with fine particles and hazardous substances for health. Although two of the chimneys are equipped with desulphurisation plants as required, the plant often uses a high chimney from which the harmful emissions are released into the atmosphere without purification and in violation of the rules.

Although EEA has not yet ruled on the request Bobov Dol TPP, to add biomass and waste to the fuel, the plant is already burning unduly straw and has even been fined for it.

Waste incineration is expensive not only for nature but also for power plants. Throughout the world, the use of such fuel has been accompanied by huge investments in specially designed powerful purifying filters. However, even their construction does not fully guarantee the capture of all hazardous pollutants.

В Bobov Dol TPP however, no improvements or changes (investments) are foreseen in the plant's main facilities, with the argument that the amount of waste and biomass will only represent 0,5% of the plant's fuel. However, in the event of waste incineration, 20 - 25% of the total amount remains in the form of ash, which must be deposited in special landfills, as some of it is toxic. Failure to store it properly results in soil and water contamination. Last but not least Bobov Dol TPP was authorized to make the requested changes, no one can guarantee that the quantities indicated will not be exceeded.

For the generation of energy by burning waste

Combustion destroys wastes that are not intended to serve as a safe fuel.
In this case, waste will be incinerated with coal. The two raw materials have a completely different composition and the combustion filters for coal will not be effective for harmful waste emissions.

Combustion of (mixed) waste carries many dangers. There is almost no separate collection in Bulgaria and there may be hazardous household waste, PVC, medicines. That is, waste can contain traces of any harmful chemicals that become even more dangerous when burned. Once burned in the TPP, they are released into the air we breathe. One of the dangers is the heavy metals that are emitted. Another major risk is dioxins, which are the most toxic substances known to be carcinogenic, damaging the body even with negligible amounts, and there are no 100% effective filters for their purification.

After burning, it remains in the form of ash from the volume of waste. Part of it is highly toxic and dangerous for the health of the workers at the TPP, as well as the people living in the neighborhood of the plant and the landfill where the ash is dumped.

Combustion eliminates waste that could otherwise be recycled: plastics, paper, cardboard, textiles. Recycling creates more than 30 times more burn jobs.
