THE PROBLEM

Why are we naming our children and naming things? Anything unnamed can be much easier forgotten, denied, destroyed.

There is a name or number on every map of our city and the smallest street. Unfortunately, only the parks and large gardens of Sofia are named after the printed and electronic publications. The names, in turn, differ. Missing standard. Off-site signboards are, by way of exception, in connection with programs or donations implemented. The smaller gardens have no names or their names have long been forgotten. But what about the big ones? Who knows the name of Sofia's oldest garden?

The garden in front of the National Theater is actually the City Garden. Who knows the name of the garden in front of the National Palace of Culture? It is South Park - Part I. Gardens should live their own lives, not just be something else. Because these "other" things may disappear. An example is the Crystal establishment. - Meeting the Soviet Army Monument? - Yes, in 18.30! In the Public Register of Landscaped Areas of the Sofia Municipality for the object number 1 in the Sredets region, the first description will be the following description: "Lawn, asphalt lanes and the Soviet Army Monument". If that is the description, what is the name? What are green spaces above all? Recreation areas or spaces where something else is located?

Let the esteemed reader be left with the wrong impression. The issues discussed are not new at all. It can be said that in their essence they are as old as the green system of the capital. A brief reference in the book "Sofia Gardens 1878-1939" shows this. For example, for the most part gardens are described using the prefixes "at", "around", "before".

Over the years there have been changes in the design and use of the landscaped areas, but this process rarely affects their names. The city garden is a good exception. In the book cited above, we read "The City (Alexandrov) Garden, part of which was designated to meet the needs of the vegetable palace, is in the process of being reconstructed as a public garden." Comparing the street names with those of the landscaped area, we will make a significant difference. It is appropriate that, in view of new uses and uses, the landscaped areas receive adequate, recognizable names. The open public park at the Military Academy must be named.

As for the European experience, the author's observations show that the map images are not exhaustive as information about the green system. Better practice exists in the field layout. Information boards are much more present. Seen here are the cities of Vienna, Brussels, Amsterdam, Lausanne.

THE OFFER

Each green area in Sofia, regardless of size, use or condition, is given a name (if none or considered inappropriate) and a clear status. The names are not directly related to sites within or adjacent to the park. They are made public thanks to unified information boards installed on site. Let's name this project "GARDEN BY NAME" *. It is based on a landscaping idea of extreme social importance. Beyond the simple name, there are important issues that relate to the development of our society: urban environment, redevelopment, standard of living, development, green consciousness, respect for nature and the right to be informed. The green system must be classified **, named, recognized and given its deserved place in the structure of the city, in the minds of the people. This way it will be more protected.

THE PROJECT

The project started as a pilot, initially for the city of Sofia and later for other cities in the country. It is advisable to cover the whole of Sofia at the same time. Spatial staging within Sofia is unnecessary as implementation is not physically impeded. Temporal phasing is required in terms of differentiating processes and introducing consistency.

According to the Name Gardens project, each green area should receive a unified nameplate with the following information: name, status, area, property, first creator, rare species, century trees.

First and foremost, a clear and simple classification of green spaces and a method of name selection should be drawn up. It is then necessary to collect the necessary information for all green areas. Name names of unnamed objects and rename those whose names are considered inappropriate. Design plates and install them according to plan diagrams. All this must be accompanied by a media campaign. Involving the public in the name selection process is of the greatest benefit to achieving the project's goals, including stimulating civil society.

The second stage of the project involves the imposition of a mandatory and accurate mention of the names in the city maps and related databases.

The name of the Gardens with Name project should be organized by the Sofia Municipality, represented by the Green System Directorate. Formed team of landscape architects can cooperate with experts from the University of Architecture, History, History, Museum, Sofia, Municipal Cultural Institute "Museum of History of Sofia" and others.

* In the title of the project, the word "gardens" was chosen as a generic for green space and the closest to the mass concept.

** According to the author, the existing classification is not exhaustive in terms of varieties of green space.
